Basketball Camp: It’s Not For the Faint of Heart

SlamSphere Insights

When one thinks about camp, it is customary to picture a more cinematic view of a child in an outdoor setting. Typically, one would see in their mind an idyllic lake surrounded by towering pine trees with campers kayaking on the lake or climbing a ropes course, shooting archery in an open field, campers’ hands stained with dye from the tye dye t-shirt making class, or kids hearing the bell and running towards the dining hall. All of these things are a part of your stereotypical camp experience. However, there are more unconventional types of camps that provide a little more intense albeit beneficial opportunity for campers.

One such camp is basketball camp. Basketball camps, especially ones run by professional athletes, are not for the faint of heart. Nor are they for the novice basketball player; these camps are specifically designed to take young athletes and hone and improve their skill set to make them a force to be reckoned with out on the court.

It is at basketball camp where they will be tested, tried, and forced to push themselves to the next level. They will run what seems endless drills up and down the court, be made to work with the team closer than they ever have, run sprints until they want to collapse, be yelled at, be encouraged, and be pushed to their limits.

But all of this is designed so that they will become the best athlete that they could possibly be. Every coach at a basketball camp has the best intentions for every one of their campers. This will be made apparent by the time and one-on-one attention they give their young athletes. Many times, these coaches have had at minimum collegiate experience, if not professional. They know what it’s like to live and breathe basketball day in and day out for years on end, which is why they are choosing to take the time to give back and raise the next generation of athletes through an experience like basketball camp.

These coaches will make not only an impact on these campers’ athletic abilities but they will also make an impact on a personal level as well. Many times, breakout sessions are a part of the basketball camp experience. In these breakout sessions, the coaches will lean on their players and help pull out the confidence often locked inside each of them.

When a young athlete walks out the doors of one of these basketball camps, they are walking out a new individual. They will have become faster, a better dribbler, a better communicator, their reflexes will have improved, and they will have gained a new knowledge of the game. While this opportunity may not be as fun or enjoyable as your stereotypical summer camp experience, it will significantly impact your life as an athlete and an individual.

If you have a child who wants to take their basketball skill set to the next level, consider enrolling them into a basketball camp near you. While these camps are most assuredly not for the faint of heart, if the young blossoming athlete wants to take their game to the next level, basketball camp is where they need to be.
